Fed: Feds to look at impact of GM on Aust's markets
The federal government will examine the impact of genetically modified crops on Australia'smajor markets.
State agriculture ministers have asked Canberra for a report that will also look atthe outlook for GM crops, and possible World Trade Organisation repercussions.
It follows a finding by gene technology regulator SUE MEEK that GM canola does notpose a health or environmental risk.
Dr MEEK is likely to approve the general release of GM canola next month, which wouldbecome the first genetically altered food crop grown in Australia.
But most canola-growing states, except Victoria and Queensland, are set to impose aban on GM crops because of concerns about the technology.
At yesterday's meeting of agriculture ministers, the states demanded a federal investigationinto how GM crops are handled in markets such as Europe.
There are fears that Australia will find itself blocked from some markets if it grows GM canola.
